Learner eXperience Waves

Evolution of Experience concept

It has been evident that, over the past decade, economy has changed from commodity to product to service, and now to experience; with special emphasis on involving emotions and feelings. It is changing the way products and services are offered; and learning is no exception.

"Learner experience is the core concept in active deep learning".

So, how it became so? And what is Learner experience?

A Learning experience refers to any interaction, course, program, or other experience in which learning takes place. It could occur in both traditional and untraditional academic settings and could include both classic and nontraditional educational interactions.

In our approach, we choose and insist on using the term “learner” experience not learning; as we are urging facilitators and designers to focus on each learner, and take care of every individual needs and interactions; thus channeling the main focus on the human not the learning content or curriculum.

The learner experience will occur anyway, however, our objective is to make it a positive planned experience whose impact and outcomes last longer than the training duration1.

Learning experience waves

The global LX movement started in 2016 with a conference in Netherlands, and again in 2017, that included a group of international pioneers interested in developing the concept of Learning experience.

Our approach is closely aligned with the global LX movement, and the below waves show the progression of the directions in learning in three different stages: we represent it with 3 waves.

Presentation

The primary focus of this stage is the content, how to adequately create and present content. This stage is content centric, it promotes presentation skills where the main emphasis is to present all the content. The learning outcomes here could be only knowledge; it is really very difficult to add skills through normal presentation styles.

Training

The focus here starts to shift from only presenting content to passive listeners, to adding some activities within the training process. So, it is not only content centered; learning outcomes here incorporate skills in addition to knowledge. This stage requires Training Of Trainers (TOT) for the trainers, and it is trainer-centered phase.

LX

It is now the era of learner experience, and the focus is not any more on the curriculum, or tackling some skills during the training; it is rather designing the complete learner experience. This incorporates the learner's thoughts and emotions, which eventually encompasses the attitude dimension.

So, we now agree that to have a fulfilling experience, good content is never enough; if we drop other components. As we now want to move from content to learning which tackles new dimensions as skills and attitudes, this requires adding the “how to” of learning and education; both for learner experience design (LXD) and learner experience Facilitation (LXF).

New Roles in learner experience

The roles packaged within the Learner Experience has reshaped to adequately suit its parameters:

  • So instead of using the term “Instructional Designer”, we now use LXD (Learner eXperience Designer)”.

  • And instead of using the term “Trainer”, we now use LXF (Learner eXperience Facilitator)”

A Learner experience facilitator not only focuses on delivering the learning material and assessing learning outcomes, but also pays attention to the whole learning experience of the learners, and the learning environment in which he/she facilitates using previously designed session flow.

Learner Experience Waves is a transformational process of learning. Transformation from content centric to trainer/teacher centric and then to learner centric. It is a comprehensive way to deal with students as a human, deal with their thought and their feeling. The role of teacher also changed by it approach. From presenter to trainer and then to become Learner eXperience Facilitator. Using this approach i felt the dynamics and engaging classroom. The learner doing deep and ative learning. What a great experience in learning !

After I gave my facilitation, I asked the learners to give their feedback and feelings about the facilitation I did. They said that it was a different way of training. It was very different from the previous training they had before, which usually used the traditional ways of taking notes, looking at the power points, and kept silent listening to the speaker. They felt enjoyed with all the activities during the facilitation. They felt so happy because they got involved and enganged with all learners at the class. They also had a chance to express and share the ideas. Through the facilitation which I applied the FIRST framework, the learners learned by doing. They had experiential learning in it so they could apply the knowledge and conceptual understanding to their real problems.

whatever thing you see around be it a mountain or a building that you will consider it as beautiful, is by designed. Learner experience is when each and every individual learnerrrrr experience the learning by being actively and deeply engaged in a safe learning environment. This didn't' just evolve from no where or just came haphazardly, it was BY DESIGNED, passing through content centric where the focus was mainly on the content with no any consideration to the receives of that particular content. Then came in teacher centered approach and the focus shifted to the teacher hindering the learners right to decide for their learning. Now. BY DESIGNED, come in a liberating approach that treat each and every learner and prepare a conducive learning environment for them to experience their learning. It is a time for them to enjoy learning, play with their facilitators,(LXF) and have enough chances to speak, listen, ask and answer with a broad smile in class and outside class and wherever and whenever they are. Big clap to SeGa team, I know it was BY DESIGNED.

A lot af teachers in the word really want to do good things for their students. They really want to teach their student and want them to be a good people in the future. But they do not knw how to do it. While there are teachers who dont give much attention for their stufdent they just teach because it is their duty. The understanding of LXF And the experience training LFD will make both type change, so i think we should work hard to Spread the LXD and LXF to a lot of teachers

There was a proverb in Indonesia,"experience is the best teacher". I think our grandpa and grandma had realized that experience will stay longer in our memory and learning. Experiencing by learner him/herself will give strong memory of learning. But it had never completed in an education system as LXD and LXF. Thanks to SeGa who systemize experience as a learning system in LXD and LXF. And other important matter that we should consider is, we should consider learner/student as customer. Then we can be motivated to give the best experience of learning. Once again, tnanks to SeGa Group for LXF and LXD knowledge and skill that we learned and thanks to NAMA Foundation for an opportunity learning about LXF and LXD.

This is the comprehensive concept of learner centric method. We have know since long time ago about student centric, and how important it is. And LX is the answer for how to facilitate learner centric objective. It is simple, effective and enjoyable.

Since I joined ROOTS PROGRAM and understand what is LXF? why focus on LXF? and how to apply LXF?... Alhamdulillah seen as a significant difference in the way I teach ... before was a traditional teacher which only focuses on curriculum, content ,without involving students ... do not think about what the students need, what their expectations... just focus how to delivert the content. .. sometimes it make my students bored, affraid, un happy etc... now i will try use XLF and focus on learnerrrrrr Centric... A Learner experience facilitator not only focuses on delivering the learning material and assessing learning outcomes, but also pays attention to the whole learning experience of the learners, and the learning environment in which he/she facilitates using previously designed session flow.... now Iam Happy... the learnerrrr happy... and we are happy...because we got real experience in process learning....

LXF, after being introduced to and trained how to deal with, proves to be what the learners, not only in my classes but in my whole school, were in true need. Naughty learners turned discipplined, sleepy learners switched to active, and already active learners added a new touch to the flow of lessons. LXF is not only fun to the learners themselves, but also a joy to the facilitators who are implementing it in their classes. Additionally, LXF prepares learners to real life situations where the real contact and behavior evoke.

Alhamdulillah as days goes on there are several fundamental changes in various aspect.Education as mirror of world civilization reflect the current trend of the given society. It looks like a moutain, the more you climb the more you see far.Based on the "FIRST" Framework more knowledge and skills as well as attitudes have been gained for Deep Learning Experience. My insight from this article is that economic development and sustainability is principally depend on the practical knowledge where by the appropriate and effective use of resources will be at maximum to solve the challenges facing the society in various aspects of life.It is true that over the past decade economy has been changed from commudity to product as well as service.Education as a service is an essential aspect for human empowerment toward social and economic sustainability at local and international level.Through the application and the utilization of the FIRST Framework the proper stragies and techniques for effective and fruitfull facilitation will experienced for shaping the learners for the fundamental changes. Thanks alot Sega team in collaboration with NAMA FOUNDATION for washing away our primitive dreams of business as usual.

The concept of learning evolved with time and shifted from focusing on knowledge and teacher to focusing on the whole behavior, attitude and cognitive ability and therefore experience of the learner. Thank you SeGa for this eye-opening experience where you shed light on many important issues in teaching and educating.

Mashallah, in my experience about ROOTS program, i can say that i really SURPRISED about two things related to this: 1- Designing is a specific mission with specific designer. 2- TOT do not deal with the attitude, it is just for skills and knowledge, so to be a "murabbi" you should treat with learner's attitude, and that's why LXF is a revolution in education!

the waves toward true learning, the paradigm shift from teacher-centered to student-centered, the teacher as a facilitator not only facilitates learners to learn but beyond that, the teacher facilitates the learners so that they learn and change, toward attitudes, skills , and better knowledge.

At my capacity I have so far considered Learners' Experience in designing and facilitation of lessons involving kids at nursery level through young adults at university level. The results are truly ground-shaking. Learners have provided their testimonials regarding both 'deep' learning and 'happy' experiences. And hereby I am designing a session titled 'Making Education Effective for Persons with Disabilities' my audience will include University Academics and Senior officers from the Ministry of Education in Tanzania. I have no grain of doubt that the session shall once again provide me and the participants memorable happiness and soo deep learning - God's Willing.

Dear Brothers and Sisters ! Greetings from the Central Asia country - Kyrgyzstan. I member of ROOTS G5 Facilitation is a teaching strategy. I believe a facilitator is a bridge between teacher and learner. A person with the open-mindedness to connect with what the learner may need in the moment. They are skilled in the art of empathy and strength of character so that they can offer kindness, boundaries, opportunities and challenges! They are mediators and tutors with a deep understanding for the challenges the childrens, students, teachers they work with work with face as they guide them towards independence ! I’m a Learning Experience (LX) designer and facilitator. I define my LX role as designing the best experiences to enhance learning. For me this is always in a group context, so it’s about bringing a group of people together and designing the right process and creating an experience that enables them to achieve a pre-determined purpose. Facilitation is that extra level awareness of group dynamics, and being able to understand the energy of the group in order to help them towards the end goal. Designing an experience and facilitating are two intertwined but very different skill sets, both of which are crucial to creating a powerful learning environment. LXD is the science and the art of creating experiences that help learners fulfill the learning outcomes they desire, in a user-centered and goal-directed way. It is a holistic, interdisciplinary approach. Built around principles and practices that expressly ensure that the learning journey is enjoyable, engaging, relevant, and informative. Experiential learning is at the heart of LXD. It takes a human-centered approach. You have to understand your audience and their unique needs before you design the course. LXD takes into account the realities of learners including the environment where they are learning. -A designer, at heart, is a problem solver. -A lack of knowledge. -A lack of confidence. -A lack of motivation. -A lack of resource or tools. Alhamduu lillahi , Thanks a lot to person of NAMA foundation and SEGA team for giving me new knowledges and skills

I can't help looking at learner experience as empowerment. Facilitating LX is an act of giving power to the learner over learning. For the first time in history learners are given a voice, an opportunity to shaw that they are not empty slates for the teachers to write on.

LX waves are good waves to our new generations in their education. Before I experience the ROOTS trip, I'm being a teacher centric rather than student centric. I focus on content, curriculum and just follow the traditional approach. From the ROOTS trip, I learnt and experienced a lot of knowledge and skill to be a good educator and as facilitator. The FIRST framework helps me in facilitate the class to more interactive. When I need to handle a program in my school, indirectly I also designed a module that used ROOTS approach. From this, I learnt how to design and facilitate my own module using this approach. The student engaged, enjoyed and happy with my facilitation in a day. Besides that, they requested to add more activities and the day of program. First wave of LX which is presentation related to me as teacher. It show me how a teacher to present the content of curriculum to the student effectively. The presentation uses LX way is more interactive and make me always remember the learning experience. Therefore, I hope my learners also will experience the same way in their learning process.

Before joining with ROOTS program, when I teach or do facilitator, the first and the mainly prepare is mastery In content. But the learner mostly unactive and unfocus. But after Joining Roots I knew how to design our facilitation so that the learner could be active, engange, and deep. And It works. Great...my student /participant now more active, engange dan more deeply on facilitation Many thanks to SeGa Team, NaMa, and wafaa

It is authentic transformation from content-centric to learner-centric, from Knowledge, Skills, Attitude (KSA) to (ASK), from passitivity of recieving knowledge and skills to participation in a positive active deep learning experience. This transformation is led by Learner eXperience Designers (LXD) and Learner eXperience Facilitators (LXF) whose main concern is the impact that lasts longer as the learner steps out of the training hall. Great thanks to SEGA group for making my experience memorable. I am impacted and enthused now to make my learners and fellow educators undergo the same remarkable experience - I have been through - while I am approaching and facilitating ROOTS soft.

Educational consultant is our upcoming title . The first time ,I have been called by this title through an email sent me by SeGa group after I have been chosen to participate in ROOTS PROGRAM, saying dear Consultant, at first I couldn't stand it and I find it a big title , we don't deserve it, as I thought the beginning that it's going to be like other programs and projects,I previously worked in with the British council where our experience is just limited on being trained and have a content within a week or two or even a month in some programs and our job as a trainers is just to Cascade such knowledge when we ask to do so. By the time I discovered that this program is completely different and this is after being engaged in an active deep learning experience introduced through waves and from the first day we were chosen to participate in ROOTS PROGRAM. Our minds, souls and bodies are some where else haunted with an amazing experience and an intensive systematic development program designed in an advanced way ,catering our learning needs, they have already known, where we are , what do we need right now and where they want us to be. ROOTS PROGRAM , SeGa Group proved their success through using every single tool that leads us to achieve our goals Insha Allah, SeGa group brought us an amazing Framework called FIRST containing a principles that embedding every single up to date approach , methods and techniques, even all kinds of telecommunications technologies are all exploited in the sake of keeping us engaged in an active deep amazing experience, where every individual consultant is learning ,monitored, guided, supported and well equipped with the needed knowledge and experience which makes us earned such title and I realised now why they call us as Educational consultants. SeGa group's success on us is being reflected on our participants as well all over the world from the first workshop where we applied FIRST Framework and we received an outstanding results through our participants feedback. We spontaneously doing the same with our participants as we were captured with this amazing program our participants are being followed, monitored and supported through social media groups to check their progress and the workshop made a profound impact on every learner . They are looking forward for having another workshops, where they could keep learning with us something new.

The highest appreciation to SeGa Team that has formulated FIRST framework. I am very happy to find this model renewal. From the presenter model, trainer, to the facilitator. At least it gives a warning to us as educator to improve our ability in delivering education to the object of education itself. This is a very progressive step to build the future pattern of education in our country especially my own country, Indonesia. That nowadays a student or educational object not only accepts knowledge alone, but is required to gain a learning experience, and with that experience then he gets something more than just knowledge. I am really very impressed with the concept presented on this blog. I will keep updating the information from here and certainly continue to improve myself in delivering materials to students or trainees. Thank you NAMA Foundation and SeGa Team as well.

I am from Group 3. Regarding the LX Waves, the left wave i.e. LXD wave, it focus more on the content of the knowledge or subject matter. It is focusing more on 'what'. Whereas for the right wave i.e. LXF wave, it focus on the way or method we deliver the knowledge. It is about the skill in delivering the knowledge. It is focusing more on 'how'. Both waves are about preparing educators/trainers/facilitators in order to prepare the learner. They are very different when compared with the traditional in which traditional approach only focus on empowering the LXD wave. They did a lot of meetings, discussions, conferences on what is the best subject/topic that they should teach? They keep on changing the curriculum. They totally neglected or did not take into account the LXF wave. After learning about FIRST framework, woah, it is totally from a very different point of view! We are not only focusing on the content but we care so much on learner experience facilitation. We pay attention to the skill that we need to empower in delivering the subject. We focus so much on experiencing the knowledge. We care very very very much on the learners feedback. We pay very close attention to the process. Instead of focus so much on 'what to become', we shift our paradigm to 'how to becoming'.

I really appreciate ROOTS program as it transform a class to more reflective and cooperation. It's like no one knows everything, learning is interaction of all participants in a classroom. The question is that each country's curriculum are designed to accomplish certain task over time, now how could we accommodate this curriculum with this kind of learner experience facilitation.

A group one participant. First of all I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to NAMA, Sega group and all consultants. Coming to the article, which explains the waves through which, LX passes. This will give the participants first, having a broad and relatively common understanding about the filosophy behind the trend and therefore, having proper implementation currently. Again, the trend of LX having known being from focussing on presentation (Knowledge oriented or content centric ) to trainer whereby, knowledge and skills put in center to Learning Experience (LX) whereby, leaner's affections, psychomotor and cognitive are placed at the center. This understandings will enable consultants tracing the future about facilitation and make effective use of appropriate facilitative methods and techniques in facilitation. Then, a boroad understanding about LX trend, the consultants will keep in touch with appropriate facilitation techniques which accelerates acquisition of attitudes, skills and knowledge. In other part, down placing all teaching techniques and activities that failed in the previous waves (ie pushing techniques) Thank you

Through LXF I can really see how the participants were enjoying their learning process. They gave their full engagement in solving the problems given, sharing the ideas and presenting their group's ideas or solution. Sometimes they can achieve more that what we are expecting. We can also learn many things from them. Through LXF both learners and facilitator can improve themselves

Learner Experince is a concept I am learning through practice using the LX tools developed by SEGA under ROOTS programme. Before joining ROOTS Programme, I knew about student centred training. However, there was a clear gap, incorporating the feelings, likes and dislikes of the learner in the facilitation process. The principles developed under this programme has made it possible for me to facilitate groups where each one is actively engaged. Thank you to NAMA and SEGA.

Learning Experience is newest model to reach the main goal of economic and also education purpose. The subject of this goal is every single person experiences. Because they are user, they also the owner of their own feeling and expression. In education environment we have to begin to make the deep learning outcomes by engaging the learner experiences. That's why every teacher/facilitator/ educator must be well organized with the LXD. The design will arrange and manage the procces so it possible to reach the succesful learning activity then each learner has deeper or maybe the deepest exleriences. Insya Alloh,

After having made a few trainings (by using F.I.R.S.T domains), I conclude that it is more difficult to become LXF (learner experience facilitator) rather than LXD (learner experience designer). It requires more efforts and more work on personal growth.

LXF Waves is interesting. As a facilitator, we can move from just delivering knowledge and skill, to delivering both of them plus an attitude. Focus on learner is humanizing learner, make the learner being a subject in the process of learning, Those focus allow learner's thinking and feeling engage in the process of learning. So this is the total learning, I think.

Learner experiences design. Another brilliant concept from segateam. Before I know this concept, my training was very traditional and only pushing information. So, maybe the learning interaction was only from me as a speaker and my slide (ppt). After I know this concept, some of my learner said that she will change her attitude and her teaching style to her student. Also some learner said that after the trainer he did something new in his class and it works, made him happy and solve his problem. This is the real treasure. Now, I try to implement this LXF in every training. So, this is bless from Allah to Sega team, Nama Foundation, and finally to usu, roots concultant. Jazakumullah ala kulli khoiir

LEARNER EXPERIENCE WAVES determines the comprehensive competency level. It covers the Attitude, Skill & knowledge. By implementing this waves, the most important element is the facilitator always learn together with the learner. This spirit is important so that we always learning together from each others. Complement each other need to be developed from the young generation.

LXD make use focused on the learner one by one, communicator learner with the Facilitator, the learner with the learner, the learner and material too. Beasiswa that, the teacher as the Facilitator give many chance to the learner to pull what they know and they understand so that the Facilitator can do more interesting with them

Changing the role of a teacher from presenter or a trainer to role of LX facilitator is a key factor. I think we, teachers, always felt that we should deliver not only knowledge or skills but also attitude. Great educators of 20th century Amonashvilli or Yanush Corchak said "You can never teach if you don't love your students and they don't love you. I always tried to provide respectful open trusting environment in my lessons. And now I learn how to provide learner experience which I need

Before, we use to see a lot of Training Centres in corporations. The focus was more on training and skills enhancement. Recently, many companies and corporations have renamed their Training Centres into Learning Centres. The term LEARN itself plays a big role in making people see the concept. LEARNING. LEARNER. Perhaps, the word 'train' is closely related to animal Trainers, like Lion Trainers, Elephant Trainers. What's in a name? Everything. Thank you NAMA and SEGA for this great initiative.

I work as a teacher since 2012 and since then I was constantly searching for new methodologies and tools to improve my lessons, and when I learned Learner eXperience concepts I understood that this was what I was looking for. For that opportunity I want to thank NAMA Foundation which sponsored that event and SeGa group which developed that program. By knowing and applying LX concept you not only create Learner's eXperience but also control it. You'll see how your students will love your lessons, and when they love it, they study better.

We experience the FIRST principals being implemented, and currently keep practising it some time later will be able to spread it to the nation. The best experience so far in terms of delivering the true meaning of education. When practising it to my learners, they were seen more energetic, responsive and full with innovation. Even though some may be shy due to language and gender barrier, they were still able to complete the task according to the needed objectives. The best part is they were very keen to do a follow up session especially to ensure the transformation is being done correctly. A few years in teaching profession has evolves me to become a presenter, just doing the 'spoon feeding' to my learners. After getting into this LXF, I found a different perspective in Learning. The classes are very engaging and full with spirit of learning. They were competing each other to apply the knowledge together. I would say this is the best approach so far in delivering the learning to the younger generation.

The challenge in the learning process is that the students have become accustomed to passive, and the teacher is not creative making the learner active, and the learning orientation is just how the targeted knowledge is transferred to the learner. LXF is an integral concept where teachers can make students more active and gain an unforgettable experience. I agree that the effects of LXF are so dazzling, and providing unforgettable experiences for both the Facilitator and the learner

Learner Experience is a concept that drives the designer and the facilitator to focus on learnerr needs .It's all about delivering the content in safe enjoyable memorable style that consider thoughts and emotions of a learner.Applying this concept in my facilitation through First framework has remarkable change .my mindset is now focusing on learner achieving active deep learning .participants positive feedback proves unique experienced they get In learning process Compared to traditional approaches which are content and trainer centred.

( LXD) and ( LXF) these two concepts changed and still make changes in the whole learning and teaching process. Everything in the life need to be done by design and this include the teaching and learning process too. These two terms lead to active and deep learning. The teacher should take these in consideration while they are teaching or dealing with their students. Prepare for a safe and comfortable environment which take in account students needs, feelings emotions , thoughts, individual differences, their prior knowledge, their different cultures and let them be responsible of their learning by applying these strategies we change the learner from passive to active, whom can share, ask ,present, interact and participate effectively. So the focus here will be on learners themselves not on the content or the curriculum. We have here a great point which is training the teachers and qualify them to use these magic terms ( LXF: learner experience facilitation & LXD: learner experience design )

Syed Helmi Al Haddad Malaysia

“I hear and I forgot, I see and I remember, I do and I understand” I like to begin my comment with this quote. What is important in education is to ensure that our students really/fully understand the knowledge that we want them to have. For a responsible teacher, we want our students understanding to be better then us! To let our students to really understand and finally become their “wisdom”. Only then their behavior/attitude will change to become a better humanbeing. I believe this is the essence of the “deep learning eXperience” There are many similar movenent to ensure the Learner eXperience such as experiential learning, situation learning, senario-based learning, case-based learning, problem-based learning, etc. But, I believe the essantial different between the SeGa LX with these is the role of both - the learner & facilitator - to ensure the “active deep” learning intentionally happened to every single students in a very smooth & positive manner.

Sulistami Prihandini (Dini) Indonesia

What impressed me from the concept of Learner Experience is, something that make a learner get a deep understanding, something that make a learner feel they are treatened as human being, which their feelings and thoughts are dealed by the facilitator, are not something complicated and sophisticated. Those are just about asking their thoughts with pulling, concern about their feeling, giving them space to convey what they have understood, or just try to understand their needs and feeling. No need too much stuff, even we no need LCD if we have not. These are about how we humanized others. These are make this concept very applicable and useful, and also have deep impact. Great!

Niam Lebanon

If we want to plan for a better future, we have to change the “Education”. To do so it is not enough to change the curriculum only. The change that needs to be done should address the learner’s interests and preferences. The Learner Experience Waves transforms teaching from being content- centric to student-centric, so we can change their attitudes and mindset. That’s why we need to care about the student’s emotional and mental state, after all we are teaching humans not robots.

Harun Kyrgyzstan

Modern time requires modern methods in teaching. This is the transition from one to a more suitable method. We must switch to the learner in the training process. When the facilitator changes in the direction of the student, he likes it, he likes to learn.

rayha Tanzania

In leanerrrr centric the main issue is "HOW" as what is needed is Deep Learning Experience. How LXD and LXF are done so as to live experience to the learner. While in these LXD and LXF there crucial procedures and materials to be considered.

Dana Itani Lebanon

When scrutinizing the concept of "learning" and basically how people learn, we find out that people learn best when they feel positive towards a certain concept. For instance, if a person has passion towards photography, he/she will read books, watch tutorials, and practice that skill. Here, it's worth mentioning that our attitude towards things affects our learning. We have continuously heard students say that " when I love the teacher/instructor, I'm more likely to love the subject he/she is teaching." And now, when we analyze the waves and look at the three different emerging roles: presenter, trainer, and learner Experience Facilitator , we understand that attitudes affect learning. Accordingly, the time has come for teachers and instructors to shift from being presenters to LX facilitators where they cater for the attitudes, skills, and knowledge; leading to a way better EXPERIENCE for their learners.
