Evolution of Experience concept
As we all know, the world is increasingly moving into an experience economy shifting from commodity to product to service, and now to experience.
The whole story starts from user experience science; that further evolved into customer experience, until we eventually reached the concept of learner experience.
Now, it is the era of Learner eXperience and the primary focus is on designing a complete learner experience that incorporates the learner's thoughts and emotions, and eventually encompasses the attitude dimension.
In our approach, we choose and insist on using the term “learner” experience not learning, as we urge facilitators and designers to focus on each learner, and take care of every individual needs and interactions; thus channeling the main focus on the human not the learning content or curriculum.
The learner experience will occur anyway however, our objective is to make it a positive planned positive experience whose impact and outcomes last longer than the training duration.
Our approach ensures that the learner experience touches base with the active and deep learning dimensions.
ACTIVE DEEP LEARNING
Active learning is a process whereby students engage in activities, such as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving- that promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of class content. It is cooperative and problem-based learning.
Some people believe active learning is about adding some educational games, and having too much movement within the training room without real purpose, while active refers to the learner him/herself, and the need to gain new knowledge, which can be acquired through reading too; not essentially high energy activities.
No doubt that active learning is very impactful and essential. It is experiential, mindful, and engaging.
But, is it enough?
Unfortunately, a lot of active sessions might turn out to be superficial, which pushed us to balance the equation with: depth.
Depth is the gap we need to bridge, it is not enough for the learning to be active it has to be active and deep.
Deep learning includes the following sciences and approaches; brain based learning, metacognition, higher level of learning outcomes and reflective learning. It relies heavily on motivation which is intrinsic, socially rooted, promotes autonomy and self-esteem, breaks learned helplessness, and is "significant learning".
