Evolution of Experience concept

As we all know, the world is increasingly moving into an experience economy shifting from commodity to product to service, and now to experience.

The whole story starts from user experience science; that further evolved into customer experience, until we eventually reached the concept of learner experience.

Now, it is the era of Learner eXperience and the primary focus is on designing a complete learner experience that incorporates the learner's thoughts and emotions, and eventually encompasses the attitude dimension.

In our approach, we choose and insist on using the term “learner” experience not learning, as we urge facilitators and designers to focus on each learner, and take care of every individual needs and interactions; thus channeling the main focus on the human not the learning content or curriculum.

The learner experience will occur anyway however, our objective is to make it a positive planned positive experience whose impact and outcomes last longer than the training duration.

Our approach ensures that the learner experience touches base with the active and deep learning dimensions.

ACTIVE DEEP LEARNING

Active Learning

Active learning is a process whereby students engage in activities, such as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving- that promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of class content. It is cooperative and problem-based learning.

Some people believe active learning is about adding some educational games, and having too much movement within the training room without real purpose, while active refers to the learner him/herself, and the need to gain new knowledge, which can be acquired through reading too; not essentially high energy activities.

No doubt that active learning is very impactful and essential. It is experiential, mindful, and engaging.

But, is it enough?

Unfortunately, a lot of active sessions might turn out to be superficial, which pushed us to balance the equation with: depth.

Deep Learning

Depth is the gap we need to bridge, it is not enough for the learning to be active it has to be active and deep.

Deep learning includes the following sciences and approaches; brain based learning, metacognition, higher level of learning outcomes and reflective learning. It relies heavily on motivation which is intrinsic, socially rooted, promotes autonomy and self-esteem, breaks learned helplessness, and is "significant learning".

More than 12 years we spent our time learning at school. From the early age until we ready to live in our sociaty. But a lot of us dont have ability that needed Fin the work field. So we can ask our self what did they learn in those years? may be it is not all their mistaken. As a teacher we should do the analylize if there are something wrong with our system and method in teaching. So the active deep leaner experience is one of the answer that teacher need to learn about. The active deep learner will make us prepare and design our learning activity to be usefull for their life.

The 'deep' part is as important as 'active'. Without it a facilitator could slip in an active learning without getting real purpose or objective of the learning. I do agree that deep learning is bridge for learner to get the objective of active learning. Therefore active learning should combine with deep learning too.

What I feel the most valuable thing in Active Deep Learning is the balance between activity and deepness of learning. Usually I observe teachers who want to make lessons more energetic, funny and feel them with energizers, games and also opposite I see teachers who insist that learning process is not a fun, it's a serious process and fill it with long boring tasks while neglecting any energizers or breaks.

I like the statement - “learner” experience not learning. This is the key of active deep learning. It won't happen until we really "engaged" in learners' life, understanding their behavior, knowing their needs & interest and ready to appreciate and share their experiences. Active deep learning is basically building bridges between the facilitator, curriculum and the learner. These three elements can't be seperatable. They're connected like a complex web. What we have to do is engage the learner into the process of learning in a way that garantee that they will be the center of whole process and we as teachers are just guiding and facilitating. Active deep learning experience really help students in understanding and practicing the knowledge they got. Teachers/educators should be able to stimulate the students and maintain their level of engagement for any activities done in class in order to achieve the learning outcomes. Amazing.... First Frame work has changed my perspective about Active learning. during this time when teachers teach with lots of activities, fun for the students i think this is active learning. Actually we have known that he concept of 'active learning' only, is not enough, not effective to reach education aims. So that we heard the term : 'fun and meaningful learning' in education, for example. The concept of Learner Experience here, gives different terminology and offcourse the scope of the words, by using 'Active and Deep' learning. It's interesting. Each learner should be active, should experience directly the concept, but with deep approach, to change or transform the mindset, the vision and the attitude. Integrating the five domains do take learners through a unique learning journey where they live it mentally, physically and emotionally and the outcomes are not limited to acquiring knowledge, but also to developing skills and attitudes which actually makes it active and deep. They help go to student centered classrooms rather than being stuck in teacher centered classrooms. The Focusing domain focuses on the learner and individuality, while the Interacting makes the experience more engaging and active among the group. The Reviewing domain is great in focusing on the whole full experience through the readiness and review, not only the activity itself. The Sequencing is putting everything together in a smooth flow. Finally the Transforming which makes sure the learners are able to link it to their real life and take action. This Framework is of great importance in this new era to change and build the generation (Ummah)!

The products and technologies are moving from solid to gases, from commodity to costumers’ experience. But what about our education? From the past decades until today, the changes are not much. Though recently it changes from content centered to curriculum centered, but the impact is almost nothing. Until recently the educationists put forth the idea of Student Centered Learning & learner’s experience. The FIRST Framework goes beyond that, to include Active Deep Learner Experience. What does it means? It’s not just about making the students active in a classroom, but more about of how to ACTIVATE the cognitive, psychomotor and attitude outcomes to each and every single student in the classroom. Thus, the teachers role has change from delivering knowledge to leaner experience facilitators. The emphasize is on individual learner, not learners, moreover learning! To ensure the learning is happening to each individual student, assessment for learning is a must, and cannot be neglected.

Throughout time, we, as learners, have preferred sessions that involve activity. Imagine sitting in a room with an instructor/teacher pushing information for hours; learning will be minimal while boredom will reach its peak! To minimize the latter, the concept of "active learning" has emerged. However, there lies a common misconception which is that active learning involves ANY kind of activity for the purpose of attaining the learners' attention. That is absolutely not true; therefore, any kind of "active" activity has to be deep. By deep we mean that it should be reflective , and it should target higher-order thinking. My experience at ROOTS has taught me how to design my sessions in an active/deep manner. Active/Deep learning transforms sessions from being regular to outstanding where learning lasts longer.
