INTERACTING WITHIN POSITIVE GROUP DYNAMICS
Bandura's Social Learning Theory suggests that people learn from one another through observation, imitation, and modeling.
Interaction is a keyword in the experience design; it is responsible for most of the parallel outcomes where learners learn how to think positively, become motivated to continue learning and form networks.
Interacting within positive group dynamics is the second domain of FIRST Framework, which consists of:
F=Focusing on Learnerrrrrr Behaviors
I= Interacting within positive group dynamics
R= Reviewing activities within RAR
S= Sequencing activities within SESSION FLOW
T=Transforming Learning Into performance
Interacting could be between
- Facilitator and learner: which we discussed in F domain
- Learners with each other: In a cooperative not competitive spirit, collaborative not individual. This is the reason for diversifying grouping techniques and adding collaborative techniques instead of the traditional setup of learners.
The I domain relies on three principles:
Every learning event is a social event since it incorporate different group of people together. The spirit of the learning journey gets significantly promoted when learners feel that they are socializing during their learning event.
The facilitator and designer should always think and work on creating this experience and spirit. One of the things that needs to be considered in the learning trips and journeys for this purpose is networking, which helps the learner create important connections through building rapport with people who will be important to him, invite them, and form groups during the learning journey.
Social events are like family and friends gathering, the spirit of these events is positive, safe, engaging, and fun, and this is this is the experience that we want learners to have during the learning journey.
Social event and group interactions could have entirely opposite effects if they were not directed towards positive spirit, which can be done through:
- Making sure that the journey's spirit is positive, futuristic, optimistic and contains practical thoughts.
- Challenging negative thoughts: when the learner starts blaming others, direct them to think about themselves, and the actions that can be done.
We are dealing with about a group of learners who will interact together in a social event with a positive spirit.
We want this group to be motivated and attentive along the whole trip
- Motivation means learners are willing to learn about the topic, to continue the session and to apply the learning after the event.
- Motivation opens a channel for the participant to understand and make the learner Motivated to complete the session and to apply the learning
Attention is different than motivation it means that learners are fully focusing and concentrating during the event. It is however, related to motivation; if the learners are not motivated to continue learning, they will lose their attention easily. Other factors that affect learner’s attention are: good readiness, attention span, and energy levels.
