Introduction
About the Facilitator
My name is Mahmoud Ftaimeh. I hold a bachelor’s degree in English literature and have experience teaching a variety of literary topics. Throughout my teaching journey, I have been interested in helping learners develop both their language skills and their ability to think critically about literary texts.
Although I am originally from Syria, this implementation took place while I was based in Istanbul. The learners participating in this learning journey were two male high school students, both aged fifteen. Despite the small group size, the session provided an opportunity to create a focused and interactive learning environment that encouraged participation and engagement.
Introduction to the Implementation Story
The FIRST-ADLX framework was applied in an interactive literary analysis session designed to develop academic English and literary analysis skills. The session aimed to encourage learners to engage actively with literary texts while strengthening their critical thinking and communication abilities.
Through a structured learner journey, participants explored literary concepts, discussed ideas collaboratively, and reflected on their learning through guided activities and discussion.

Why FIRST-ADLX?
The FIRST-ADLX framework was selected because it supports active participation, learner engagement, and meaningful learning. Literary analysis requires more than understanding information; it requires learners to interpret, discuss, analyze, and express ideas confidently. The framework provided a structure that encouraged learners to participate actively and take ownership of their learning process.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this learning journey, learners were expected to achieve the following outcomes:
Attitude Learning Outcomes
- Increase confidence in their abilities.
- Increase confidence in expressing their ideas and interpretations.
Skills Learning Outcomes
- Improve literary analysis skills.
- Improve their ability to analyze literary texts and communicate their interpretations.
Knowledge Learning Outcomes
- Understand key literary concepts.
- Develop a better understanding of literary themes and ideas.
Performance Outcome
Participants can produce a short analytical response to any literary text, demonstrating understanding, critical thinking, and clear communication.
Sequence of Activities
The learning journey was designed as an interactive literary analysis session (an Active Deep Learner eXperience). The session began with a brief warm-up discussion that helped activate learners’ prior knowledge and prepare them for engagement with the literary text (opener).
Following this activity, learners participated in a guided reading activity where they explored the text with facilitator support. This was followed by collaborative analysis, during which learners worked together to identify themes, ideas, and interpretations.
The session concluded with a short written analytical response, followed by feedback and reflection. This sequence enabled learners to move gradually from initial engagement with the text toward deeper analysis and personal interpretation.
One Learning Activity Using the RAR Model
Collaborative Literary Analysis Activity
Readiness Increase
Participants were invited to engage in a brief warm-up discussion designed to activate their prior knowledge and prepare them for the literary text. Key vocabulary and concepts related to the text were introduced to support understanding and increase readiness for analysis. In addition to preparing them mentally for the activity, learners’ motivation and attention were increased at this stage to ensure their full engagement in the activity facilitation stage. This preparation helped learners approach the activity with greater confidence.
Activity Facilitation
Learners read the literary text and worked collaboratively to identify themes, ideas, and interpretations. Throughout the activity, guidance and support were provided to help them explore the text more deeply and express their thoughts clearly. Discussion played a central role in the activity, allowing learners to share perspectives and build upon one another’s ideas while developing their analytical thinking skills.
Reviewing Actively
After completing the analysis, learners shared their interpretations and discussed their understanding of the text. They received feedback on their observations and reflected on how their ideas developed during the activity. Through this reflection, learners recognized the importance of examining literary texts from multiple perspectives and considered how they could apply similar analytical approaches in future academic missions.
FIRST Domains in Action
F – Focusing on Learner Behaviors
This domain was activated through the use of interactive discussions that encouraged learners to participate actively throughout the session. Attention was given to learner engagement and contribution, ensuring that every learner remained involved in the exploration and analysis of the literary text.
I – Interacting within Positive Group Dynamics
Positive interaction was encouraged through activities that activated learners’ prior knowledge and invited participation from the beginning of the session. The warm-up discussion (opener) created a supportive environment where learners felt comfortable sharing ideas and contributing to discussions.
R – Reviewing Activities within RAR Model
The RAR model was implemented during the collaborative literary analysis activity. Readiness Increase occurred through preparing the participants mentally, physically, and emootionally to participate. Activity Facilitation took place while learners collaborated or worked individually to finish a mission with facilitator support. Reviewing Actively occurred when learners shared interpretations, received implicit feedback, and reflected on their understanding of the text.
S – Sequencing within Learner eXperience
The session followed a clear and logical sequence that began with activating prior knowledge, followed by guided reading, collaborative discussion, and reflective closure. Interactive questioning, facilitator guidance, collaborative work, and constructive feedback supported the progression of learning and helped maintain learner engagement throughout the journey.
T – Transforming Learning into Performance
This domain was activated through the assignment of a short analytical mission that required learners to apply their learning independently. Learners were encouraged to express their ideas clearly and demonstrate their understanding of the literary text. Their performance was monitored, feedback was provided, and the mission was connected directly to authentic academic expectations and requirements.
Conclusion
Impact on the Facilitator
Applying the FIRST-ADLX framework enhanced my effectiveness as a facilitator by making my sessions more structured, learner-centered, and interactive. The framework helped create a learning environment that encouraged participation, reflection, and deeper engagement with the content.
One of the most important insights I gained was that active participation and meaningful reflection significantly strengthen learning outcomes. The experience reinforced the value of designing learning journeys that place learners at the center of the learning process.
Impact on the Learners
The learners responded positively to the learning journey and demonstrated a high level of engagement throughout the session. They showed a willingness to participate, contribute to discussions, and share their interpretations of the literary text.
Feedback from the learners indicated that they felt more confident, better able to understand the text, and appreciative of the interactive learning approach. Comments such as “The discussion helped me understand the text better” and “I felt more confident sharing my ideas” reflected the positive impact of the Learner eXperience.
Impact on the School and Society
As this implementation was conducted on a small scale with only two learners, the impact was primarily observed at the learner level rather than within the wider community. However, the participants demonstrated increased confidence and more positive attitudes toward academic missions, which may contribute to improved academic performance and continued growth in the future.
Closing Reflection
This implementation demonstrated how the FIRST-ADLX framework can support active participation, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement even within a small learning group. By combining structured facilitation with interactive learning opportunities, the session created an environment where learners could analyze, discuss, reflect, and communicate their ideas with greater confidence and understanding.
