About the Writer
My name is Zahraa Khodary, and I am passionate about designing meaningful Learner eXperiences that engage learners both intellectually and emotionally. My interest lies in creating learning environments that support personal growth, emotional well-being, and authentic self-expression. I was introduced to the FIRST-ADLX framework through my professional development journey, where I discovered its value in designing learner-centered experiences that combine engagement, reflection, and meaningful application. Since then, I have sought to integrate its domains into my facilitation practices to create memorable and impactful learning journeys.
Challenge or Problem
Young adults often experience a period of self-discovery in which they are exploring their identities, emotions, and perspectives. Although many learners are naturally curious and eager to engage in creative experiences, some hesitate to express their thoughts and feelings due to fear of judgment, lack of confidence, or uncertainty about how their ideas will be received. This challenge can limit participation and prevent learners from benefiting fully from reflective and collaborative learning opportunities. Therefore, the primary challenge in this session was to create a psychologically safe environment where learners felt comfortable expressing themselves openly and engaging in meaningful reflection.
Participant Persona and Context
A group of young people aged between eighteen and twenty-two participated in this Learner eXperience. This age group represents a stage characterized by personal growth, the search for identity, and the formation of self-perception. Participants showed a clear interest in activities that allowed them to use their imagination and freely express their thoughts and feelings. They interacted within a supportive learning environment that encouraged engagement and participation, while taking into account individual differences in their levels of confidence and boldness in self-expression. Therefore, building trust and a sense of safety were essential elements to ensure everyone’s positive participation throughout the experience.
eXperience Design and Sequence of Activities
Why FIRST-ADLX?
I selected the FIRST-ADLX framework because it provides a comprehensive approach to designing Learner eXperiences that address both engagement and meaningful transformation. The framework emphasizes learner participation, positive interaction, reflection, and application, making it particularly suitable for sessions focused on emotional awareness and personal growth. It enabled me to design a structured journey that gradually guided learners from readiness and imagination to interaction, reflection, and real-world connection.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this Learner eXperience, participants were expected to be able to:
Attitude Learning Outcomes
- Appreciate the value of self-reflection and emotional awareness.
- Demonstrate openness toward different perspectives and experiences.
- Value a supportive and non-judgmental learning environment.
Skills Learning Outcomes
- Express personal thoughts and emotions with confidence.
- Share ideas and experiences respectfully with peers.
- Reflect on experiences and derive personal meaning from them.
Knowledge Learning Outcomes
- Define the importance of emotional readiness in learning.
- Describe how imagination can support self-exploration and reflection.
- Explain the relationship between personal experiences and self-awareness.
Sequence of Activities
I designed and facilitated one synchronous learning session conducted in a face-to-face setting. The journey began with a grounding and breathing activity designed to increase readiness and help learners become mentally present. This was followed by a storytelling and guided visualization learning activity that invited participants to enter an imaginative space and engage with the narrative on a personal level.
Afterward, learners participated in a dialogue and discussion activity where they shared their imagined experiences and listened to the perspectives of others. This interaction promoted communication, empathy, and mutual understanding. The journey then moved into a reflective activity that encouraged learners to explore the meanings behind their experiences and connect them to their personal lives. Finally, the session concluded with a closure activity in which participants summarized their learning and identified connections between the session and real-life situations.
The sequence was intentionally designed to respect learner energy levels and emotional readiness. Activities progressed gradually from individual reflection to social interaction and deeper personal insight, creating an Active Deep Learner eXperience that encouraged engagement throughout the journey.
Applying the FIRST-ADLX Framework Domains
To achieve deep impact, I applied the FIRST-ADLX Framework to design and facilitate an Active Deep Learner eXperience:
Focusing on the Learner: I ensured the engagement and participation of every individual. For example, during the emotional-release and breathing exercises, I made sure that each learner was mentally and emotionally ready. I also gave learners space to express themselves, particularly during the personal storytelling activity.
Interacting within Positive Group Dynamics: I encouraged everyone to interact collaboratively and monitored their participation to ensure positive interaction within the groups.
Reviewing Activities within RAR: I designed the learning activities using the three stages of the RAR Model: Readiness Increase, Activity Facilitation, and Reviewing Actively.
Sequencing within Learner eXperience: The activities progressed smoothly from calming techniques to visualization, interaction, and then reflection.
Transforming Learning into Performance: I helped learners connect their learning to real-life examples, ensuring meaningful impact that extended beyond the learning journey.
Although the session was successful overall, achieving balanced participation was challenging, as the more reserved learners were hesitant to speak. I addressed this by maintaining a safe and calm environment that encouraged gradual engagement and interaction.
This experience reaffirmed the vital role of emotional readiness—one of the concepts promoted by the FIRST-ADLX Framework—in learning. When learners feel safe, calm, and supported, they become more receptive to exploration and self-expression, as well as to understanding themselves and others.
